Some thoughts on Game of Thrones, season 8, episode 5

Without a doubt the best episode of the season.
It was a good twist.
The set-up, Dany going mad, was a bit weak, but whatever.
We got Clegane Bowl, and it looked marvelous.
It was a good fight. The Jamie - Euron fight not so much.
There were other great scenes, which utilized the characters built well.
It mainly was a good episode because the best thing of the books is the third book, A Storm of Swords, because it shows well this quote from the first book, where Lord Varys asks: “Tell me, Lord Eddard ... why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones?”
It shows this through the eyes of Brienne, travelling with Podrick and Arya, travelling with The Hound, through Westeros, which is utterly torn by the wars. I feel George R.R. Martin really writes Literature here. The Battle of Blackwater, in the first book and these scenes A Storm of Swords really made me think of Tolstoy’s War and Peace.
But this huge dread was pretty absent from the show, up till now.

Right: I liked the wildfire exploding (the green explosions), and it not really mattering that much.

Well, I think it was the worst episode ever and most of the imdb reviews seem to agree. Almost all actions were out of chsracter or without a proper build up. Dany gone mad made no sense at all, after all those seasons fighting for the innocents. Why would she not attack cercei first, being the cause of het anger.why would see execute het closest advicer, having done nothing yet and not the one who told first. Why was Jaime back in camp cercei after all those seasons slowly bteaking free? What was arya doing excerpt running around? Why did the hound not kill cercei first? Nothing makes sense, just useless violence througout the episode.

Unknown:
Varys tried to poison Dany. I missed that myself.

Not many seem to like it, though.

That does explain a bit. Still not clear why Dany did not channel her hatred on Cercei first. And her madness was not build up properly (or not well acted)

(unknown is me, Stephan, not clear why I am shown as unknown)

ah, stephan. i had two options

everything i'm saying is under the disclaimer that it's been a new show ever since they're not following the books anymore.

in reviews they're saying seasons 1 -4 are perfect and then it goes awry.

i did say Dany going mad wasn't set up properly.

it's just a good episode in itself, for me. i think the characters are *pretty* consistent. but it's just the way you wanna go into it. i try to like every episode. i understand this episode was directed by the guy that did battle of the bastards and battle of winterfell. imo he's just an artist and he conveyed the senselessness of war well.
