So it's great how these songs from my youth now come up for me again and I can appreciate them even more. I've posted Sepultura's Refuse/Resist before, which is about the people taking the streets in protest. Now I'm posting Rage Against The Machine - Killing In the Name. The lyrics are so great. I used to think it is hyperbole to say: "so all those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses," but now Naomi Klein is explaining to me, in her book No is not enough, how racism is one of the tools the ones in power use to set up people against each other so they're too busy to revolt against the people pulling the strings. Another, more recent, example is how wages are kept to a minimum, so people are too busy trying to keep their head above water. All the answer needed to all this is just a resounding: "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"

Soms vraag je je af of niemand je begrijpt. Noodgedwongen heb ik mijn afgelopen klimaatweekend ook gebruikt voor geestelijk herstel. Ik heb de laatste tijd namelijk wat last gehad van wat overspannenheidsklachten. Overspannenheid komt vaker dan gemiddeld voor in de klimaatbeweging. Waarom is dat eigenlijk? Het thema van het klimaatweekend was klimaatrechtvaardigheid. Op zondag kwamen de Guardians of the Forest langs. De dag werd geopend met verscheidene openingsceremonies, zo dansten we op drums en stelde iedereen zich kort voor. Ook brachten we offers door iets op het vuur te gooien. Dat was symbolisch: we gooiden er een takje op en daarbij uitten we een wens.  Mijn wens luidde: "I welcome all feelings, Good and bad, There's a place for all of them" Ik was erg onder de indruk van mijn eigen wens. Great video essay by the lovely channel  Wisecrack  on what probably makes  Stranger Things  great. Little reveal: it's not really nostalgia. It's something way more deep and beautiful. (As I'm typing, I see season 2 is dropping in less than an hour. I won't be able to see it for a couple of days, though.) To go into the Wisecrack video a very little bit, spoilers for that, just watch it first, it's not long (information heavy, for sure): The video also mentions  South Park 's memberberries. The memberberries are designed to be very irritating characters, with success. South Park is completely on point with them, though: nostalgia is used terribly unimaginative in society now. It's more a dumb kind of fetish. So Strangers Things looks like a lot of nostalgia, and *is*, on the surface, but at the core it's about taking kids and kids' world view seriously. So is Donald Trump a fascist? Just some musings by someone that doesn't actually know that much about that term. So it's not that fascism is smart (or dumb, for that matter, it's just a form of government), but I'm afraid Trump is too dumb to be a fascist. So if he's a fascist, he'd be an proponent of something like dumb-fascism. (Is Trump dumb? Maybe not terribly, but just willfully ignorant on too many subjects. Maybe it's more of a trait of totalitarianism in general, but fascist regimes will create internal and external enemies. Internal ones I think are most striking. Does he create does? Yes. But in more ways than you'd imagine. More obvious ones are immigrants in general, especially Muslims and Mexicans. But really it's possibly *all* minorities that are the internal enemy. Ik post er niet meer veel over, maar ik ben nog steeds behoorlijk bezig met poker. Wanneer je je meer in verdiept in hedendaagse theorie over het spel, dan wordt poker steeds meer mathematisch en zo minder toepasselijk op het echte leven. Maar de essentie blijft: het is een zero-sum game (rake buiten beschouwing gelaten). En veel in het leven is ook zero-sum. Bijvoorbeeld politiek. Dat betekent niet gelijk dat je een cynicus als Donald Trump hoeft te worden. Maar het betekent wel dat ik nadenken over het mislukken van de formatie met GroenLinks behoorlijk nutteloos vindt. Rutte had *niks* te verliezen door *niks* aan Klaver te geven. Iedereen kon met die kennis van te voren beredeneren dat de onderhandelingen met GroenLinks zouden mislukken. I work for a Christian School Board. My job is ICT. Not general ICT, but application management. So all day I, of course, get general ICT questions from coworkers and I refer them to the systems manager (some company on the phone) or I begrudgingly help them. Our office is in a building with mostly NGO's, for some reason. Another thing is our toilet is in the hall where every worker and visitor for the building comes in. When I've gone to pee, I usually try to ignore people that happen to be in the hall. For some reason today I didn't (the reason maybe being we'll be getting our own private toilets, in a few months!). Today, there was a woman in the hall that apparently didn't know where to go. So this time, instead of walking on, I asked: do you know where to go? So she did, but didn't understand how. One of the ways I think people can be too shortsighted, is that they can only think from their own personal viewpoint. They can’t view concepts in an abstract way. I’ll give two examples. They're both about relationships and they're both on the internet. Those being the context is rather unsurprising, because: 1. people aren't taught in school that relationships can be viewed in an abstract way, 2. people often write down their first reaction on the internet (we've moved past the internet expression tl;dr (too long; didn't read); you now just assume half the reactions on an article, and often the most popular ones, are from people that just didn't read it) and 3. I personally enjoy thinking about psychology and relations, so I'm a more advanced than most.  The first time I came to my realization, was while reading the IMDB forum on The Sopranos. (English below) Vorige week hadden we klimaatweekend: het trainingsweekend van de Nederlandse Klimaatbeweging. We leerden hoe we beter actie kunnen voeren en kregen uitleg over technische en politieke achtergronden. Maar ook ging het weekend over wat klimaatverandering en daar tegen vechten met ons dóet. Ik maakte korte video'tjes van negen van de deelnemers aan het weekend. In deze twee van zaterdagmiddag gaan twee klimaatstrijders, Maarten en Maria, hun emoties niet uit de weg. Bedankt aan allebei voor het delen 😊 Last week we had climate weekend: a weekend of training by the Dutch Climate Movement. We learnt to do better protest and we got some background on technical and political stuff. But the weekend was also about what climate change and the fight against it *does* to us. I made short videos of nine of the participants of the weekend. In these two from Saturday afternoon two climate warriors, Maarten and Maria, are not afraid to face their emotions.

Ik sprak laatst een VVD'er dus die kon ik dan eens off-keyboard, in plaats op Facebook, mijn bezwaar tegen de partij vertellen: In oorsprong zijn de peilers van de VVD, van conservatisme en liberalisme, okay, want je moet niet veranderen wat niet veranderd hoeft en je wilt vrij laten wat niet gereguleerd hoeft te worden. Maar de partij draagt die waarden al lang niet meer uit. Ze zijn xenofoob, want de brief van Rutte was verwerpelijk, want alleen als je een kleurtje hebt moe t je 'normaal' doen, waarbij 'normaal' ook niet wordt gedefinieerd. En de partij is niet liberaal. Dat conservatisme noemde ik eigenlijk niet in het gesprek, maar bedacht ik achteraf en vond ik wel aardig om hier te noemen, wel besprak ik de brief. Is conservatisme eigenlijk wel een officiële peiler voor de VVD? 'Wat is dan een voorbeeld van dat niet liberaal zijn?', vroeg hij. So I'm rereading Dune after some fifteen plus years. I am not disappointed. Let's start with: people always say "Dune's maybe more fantasy. Certainly not hard scifi." Hard scifi means very sciency. They're completely right. But there is one science Herbert was apparently a big hobbyist in: geology, or the science of planet wide ecosystems. It's so absolutely lovely the planet Dune he creates in his minds eye. The balance of drought, sand, spice and 'the makers': the sand worms. It is so uplifting to me that he lets the Fremen have control ultimately over that balance.  And that's certainly something I can use in these dark times with a climate change denier in the White House. Literary aspects. Beginning my read I was pretty turned off by how Gurney Halleck, for instance, is such a cliche, as a 'warrior poet'. Todays big spectacle movies are geared at least as much towards the Asian as the Western market. I think that makes for interesting new movies. The movie in this genre I liked best this past year was World of Warcraft (WoW). Both Star Wars Rogue One and WoW introduced the idea of there mostly not being true evil and good, just shades of grey, Rogue One ultimately just played lip service to it.  Most importantly, to me, WoW introduced a completely different kind of lore, with great depth, while Rogue One mostly did lame call backs to earlier movies ("it's a trap"). Rogue One *did* have incredible visuals and actors and acting performances (I was especially not disappointed in Ben Mendelsohn's role).  The moment where Rogue One lost me was when the Yip Man actor was introduced as a Zatoichi character (mashing together a respectively ultimate Chinese and Japanese character).
